Northern Ireland
The car ferry at Greencastle will make it easy for you to explore the northern coasts of Derry and Antrim - including the Giants Causeway, Carrickarede Rope Bridge and Bushmills Distillery. Derry (Londonderry) is only a 15 minute drive from Redcastle, it is the only remaining completely walled city in Ireland and one of the finest examples of Walled Cities in Europe. The Walls were built during the period 1613-1618 by the honorable, the Irish Society as defences for early seventeenth century settlers from England and Scotland. Few places in these islands can offer such a compelling and unique experience for the visitor as the Walled City of Derry - its setting on the steep hills overlooking the wide sweep of the River Foyle, its distinctive architecture and its famous walls all provide enormous appeal. A walk around the walls reveals a splendid city crammed full of history, heritage, interest and a vibrant cultural scene (www.youtube.com/watch?v=frT8Lp7mUpk). You will also find an array of excellent restaurants, lively pubs and great shops
Bars & Restaurants
In addition to "Captains Bar" in the Carlton Redcastle Hotel, there are 2 other pubs within walking distance, in the village of Redcastle, the "Redcastle Bar" and "The Bayview". There are numerous other excellent restaurants and bars in nearby Moville & Greencastle, where traditional music can be enjoyed.
Drives
Take the 100 mile drive around Inishowen often described as "Ireland in miniature". The "Inishowen 100" (Inis-Eoghain100) is a journey of roughly 100 miles around the perimeter of the Peninsula, taking in all the natural scenic beauty along the way. You will discover the most picturesque and dramatic coastal scenery, collections of ancient forts and monuments, traditional craft centres, and numerous charming hospitable villages, mountains and valleys, forest and rugged barren bogland; you will not fail to be impressed by much of what you see. Scenic highlights include the Gap of Mamore, and Malin Head - Ireland's most northerly point. On the western side of Inishowen, the ferry service crosses Lough Swilly between Buncrana and Rathmullen, provides easy access to the rugged, largely unspoilt beauty of West Donegal. - although this service only operates in the summer months.
Golf
Redcastle Golf Club is bordered on one side by the waters of Lough Foyle with panoramic views across the mountains of Derry and on the other by equally spectacular views up into the hills of Donegal. This challenging 9-hole course makes the best use of the hillside location afforded to it. From the first hole - a gentle uphill dogleg left - you will be tested at every turn. After your round you can relax in the Carlton Redcastle Hotel, where the bar serves food throughout the day. The internationally renowned championship links course at Ballyliffin is only a 20 minute drive away and other challenging golf courses on the Inishowen Peninsula can be found at Greencastle and Buncrana.
