Andalusian retreat in Moorish Alhama de Granada

Alhama de Granada is a picturesque Andalusian town in Southern Spain about 50 km from both Granada (Alhambra Palace & Sierra Nevada) and the Mediterranean Costa del Sol. The town, which has a distinctive Moorish flavour, perches dramatically on top of a huge rocky spur and overlooks a breath-taking gorge with the Alhama River flowing beneath.

The area is ideal for those wanting a relaxing break in real Spain with amazing scenery and historic buildings on your doorstep. The surrounding countryside has lots of areas of interest to walkers, cyclists, sight-seers, market-lovers, and bird watchers. In addition the Sierra Nevada Mountains are around 1½ hour’s drive away where there are sufficient runs to satisfy all standards of skier and snow boarder. Bermejales lake, a 15 min drive away, offers a sandy beach with swimming in beautiful suroundings and the beaches of the Costa del Sol can be reached in 50 minutes.

Alhama has plenty of shops, mini-supermarkets and banks with cash withdrawal points. There are several restaurants in and around the town, and many bars where you are usually served Tapas (a small free meal) with your drinks. Fresh fruit and vegetables are in plentiful supply here and the market offers a great supply of fresh produce at very reasonable prices. There is also a hot spring on the edge of the town suitable for bathing, which can reach 47 degrees Centigrade.

Casa Azul, the rental cottage, is situated in the old Arab Quarter of Alhama de Granada & is very close to the impressive Church of the Incarnation which can be seen dominating the whole town from a distance. It is also a very short walk to the edge of the gorge with its breath-taking views.

The cottage has recently been restored and the accommodation, which is all on one level, comprises:

· Double bedroom with built-in wardrobes,

· Bathroom with bath and a shower,

· Modern kitchen equipped with electric hob, fridge, toaster, kettle, microwave and full range of cookware.

· Lounge-diner with log-burning stove, sofa-bed and French Windows.

· Secluded Andalusian courtyard offering complete privacy.

All Towels and bedding are provided, and a cot can be made available if required.

A welcome pack is provided and includes tea, coffee, bread, eggs, milk and a bottle of wine to help you start your relaxing holiday immediately!

Flights can be made to Granada or Malaga using several low cost airlines from an airport near you. Driving directions from the airport are provided to help you find your way easily, though a reasonably-priced taxi service can also be arranged, and once in Alhama there is no need for a car.

Drive times approx 45 mins from Granada or 1.20 mins from Malaga, and car parking is available in front of the house or at the end of the street (by our neighbour’s house).

There is no smoking in the casa, but you are welcome to smoke in the courtyard.
